Assemble Head In Sunburst Sound - S/T

In fact, The Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound is the combination of 1920s science fiction books, hallucinogens, and the west coast. If there were a soundtrack for Pranksters who went on a voyage in outer space, the Assemble Head would be first request. A specific track comes to mind that would fit the soundtrack famously, “Kurtz’s Shroud.” In and of itself, an interesting literary character to choose a song title for, a correlation that reveals the weight of what could otherwise be considered a dreamy haze of a folk tune. However, Marlow in Heart of Darkness experiences a similar expedition to that of the AHSS listener, one that navigates to the center of an unknown, unpredictable terrain. So, the link is legitimate.

Even their website insists: “hallucinatory rock n’ roll and pastoral moonbase laments that voyages from the kingdoms of the acid rock masters to Morricone’s desert soundscapes…” I couldn’t agree more.

Witch - Paralyzed

Witch is Dave Sweetapple (bass), J Mascis (drums), and Kyle Thomas (guitar/vocals), but they're no indie-metal super group or side project; that would underestimate the band members' commitment. This follow-up to their 2006 self-titled debut remains true to the classic heavy rock sound of the first, but has evolved as the band has learned to play to each other's strengths. They've returned to their punk roots and attack with a more aggressive tempo. This record burns with hostility.

Witch - S/T

If you come into this record with preconceived notions, thinking this is a side project of J Mascis and that it will bear any similarities to his solo work with the Fog or Dinosaur jr you will be mistaken. This is a band of it's own, a smoldering entity with a true 70s inspired sound. A mesmerizing cloak of blue cheer and black sabbath-esque tunes, featuring dark enchanted lyrics, and guitar solos to make your head spin right off. Pick this up, turn down the lights, and watch the shadows dance to their evil delight through the witching hour and beyond.

Radio Moscow - Brain Cycles

This is a new Moscow wind, fresh-air. This album crushes you a little bit harder than the previous self-titled. What you did not get from the previous one, completes you here.. here, you hear drum solos, an entire acoustic blues mississipi cycle in your brain.
But not just that, you got "City Lights" with a fuzz bass dropped style, with the entire riff, going back to "Hold On", that takes you back to the 70's as the first momment that music starts ringing in your head, a cold breese of mr. Jimi Hendrix, on an original way to sound in your brain.
Not so different from his previous one, but living on the same planet, Radio Moscow gave another step going up to trade his mark on the blues, psychedelic 70's sound.

We'll wait for more, and more.. like this. Quality.

Mammatus - the Coast Explodes

While the lead track on Mammatus' sophomore release is the third in their “Dragons of the Deep” series, The Coast Explodes overall is a different animal than their self titled debut.

The change, for the most part, is good on The Coast Explodes. “Dragon of the Deep Part Three (Excellent Swordfight)” and the title track carry traces of the bombastic stoner jams from the debut, but both those songs and “Pierce the Darkness” are more energetic and less inclined to form shapes through the fog of distortion. They're all less jam-like in structure and seem more like thought-out compositions (and in the case of “The Coast Explodes,” an extremely well conceived one).

There are two potential deal-breakers on the album, though. One are the vocals, which have that same sort of nasally whine as Dead Meadow. Personally, I think they work well – they add another level of psychedelia. The second is “The Changing Wind,” which sounds like some sort of faux traditional Japanese folk song. It seems woefully out of place on the album, more so when you take into consideration the extra noises added for effect (were those dolphins I heard?).

If “The Changing Wind” is the band having a goof, I suppose they deserve it, for the rest of The Coast Explodes is impressive work. An excellent follow-up.

Mammatus - S/T

Holy Mountain Records, home of the already legendary Om, has expanded its roster with this impressive collection of stoner drone psychedelic jam rock. While Mammatus hasn’t been around for very long (their bio says they formed in early 2005), they deliver on just about every level.

Their self-titled debut, recorded “in their makeshift garage studio using some cheapo computer junk,” draws heavily on the cornerstones of mind warping, heavy music – Hawkwind, Sleep, Floyd, Sabbath. While there are only four songs – “The Righteous Path Through the Forests of Old,” “The Outer Rim,” “Dragon of the Deep Part One,” and “Dragon of the Deep Part Two” – the total running time is over 45 minutes, which means you’re in for a hell of a lot of cosmic wandering as the band stretches out and cuts loose with some creative playing (especially with the last track, an epic in every sense of the word). It’s mostly instrumental, although ethereal vocals in the s t y l e of Dead Meadow do creep in from time to time.

I was really impressed with this one. It’s both heavy, soothing, and altogether engrossing. Bottom line, if you want your head caved in and you want to feel really good about it, get this album. Recommended.

Sir Lord Baltimore - Kingdome Come/Sir Lord Baltimore

Everyone knows the three main Proto Metal bands; Sabbath, Purple, and Zeppelin. But how many have heard of Baltimore? When I first heard this album I was floored first of all by it's heaviness and it's raw fury, and second by the fact that it seemed to be more influential than I could have thought!I hear elements in SLB's music that had become familiar to me through bands like Iron Maiden, Dio, Judas Priest, Kiss, The Cult, early Metallica and even Deep Purple and early Van Halen. For instance; it's hard to believe that songs like Kingdom Come, Hellhound and Ceasar LXXI were recorded in 1970/71. They sound like they could have come straight out of the NWOBHM scene 10 years later. Tell me that Iron Maiden didn't rip Hellhound off in Murders In The Rue Morgue. Tell me Metallica didn't do the same with Woman Tamer in Metal Militia.

The Fuzz Tone on this album (these albums) screams and shreds. Very dirty and "60's-ish" on the first album, and cleaner, more controlled (though no less heavy) on the second. The drums pound and the vocals roar. This guy could sing! If they had become bigger and released more albums, he would definitely have been included in the Ultimate Metal Singer cannon.

So if you're a fan of true Heavy Metal, you won't be disappointed by this cd. It may even become one of your favorites.

Norrsken - Hokus Pokus

Hailing with more sound quality than the other recordings in tape, Norrsken makes you remember bands such as Pentagram with evil Jethro Tull clean guitar. You can hear nowadays these sound in both bands of the most carismatic band members: Joakim Nilsson (Graveyard) and Magnus Pelander (Witchcraft).
It contains four powerfull songs by these tipycal 'swedish-doom' band, very nice riffs, raw vocals, keep up drums, and drop dead bass! There you go.. Norrsken!

Norrsken - Armaggedon/Tribute Compilations

Norrsken, the swedish guys (kids), formed by Graveyard's Joakim Nilsson and Rikard Edlund, with Magnus Pelander's from Witchcraft and Kristoffer Sjödahl on the drums, who is now in Dead Man.
Norrsken is just that, those four guys, who you hear know in some heavy fuckin' cool bands, joined together, to make, if not the best, one of the best stoner swedish doom style of music, you know, you can not confuse it, when you hear those clean evil tones, by these guys, and the evil distortion coming, the raw vocals, etc.
I mean, I love Graveyard, but this recordings are just, unbelievably awesome.

Kylesa - Static Tensions

Static Tensions picks up where Time Will Fuse Its Worth left off - two drummers weaving beats around each other, spurring on pummeling riffs. While the dual drumming usually results in a monolith of primal sound, it’s used on songs like “Said and Done” to create a polyrhythmic cacophony. The guitars are tuned bowel-loosening low, but the vintage amplifiers lend them a warm, soothing tone. There are a few proggier numbers, like “Running Read” and “Only One,” vaguely reminiscent of the band’s fellow Savannah, Georgia dwellers Baroness, although a fair bit darker (incidentally, John Blaizely’s cover art is amazing). “Unknown Awareness” is a continuation of the band’s one psychedelic ballad an album approach (see “Between Silence and Sound” and “Welcome Mat to an Abandoned Life” for past examples). “To Walk Alone,” “Nature’s Predators,” and “Said and Done” mark the pinnacle of the Kylesa’s achievement: sludgy bottom end, psychedelic leads, heavy grooves, hardcore punk speed, and compelling vocals.

Best band I've heard in a quite few years.. :)

Duke Ellington Meets Coleman Hawkins

Collaborative albums such as this one always have been something of a stunt on the part of the record label, with the artists themselves usually stuck with too little time to work out something that would easily act as a functional compromise. Many of these albums, then, have faded away with time. Impulse!, however, had more than its share of solid collaborations, with some moments of glory thrown in for good measure. This one isn't really one of those moments of glory, but it is a lot of fun, whether it's the daffy cut-up of "Limbo Jazz" or the slow New Orleans smoke of "Wanderlust." All present turn in nice performances on this set of Ellington numbers, there are no blatant flubs (though the ensemble isn't as tight as it could have been.) The remastering is excellent, giving the disc a nice clear sound, and a bonus track, "Solitude," has been added.

Witch/Earthless - 7" Split

"Can't Help Doin' Wrong" comes from the same sessions that produced Witch's latest "Paralyze" and captures the same manic energy inside of a psych-sludge gem.
Earthless continues to do what they do best with "Jull", a six minute face melter with a drum solo. This side was recorded at Pro Boys Audio in Costa Mesa, CA by Nadav Eisenman and Brian McKinley.
