What inspired Goodbye to the Machine?

Jay: Like the name hurt, it had several relevant meanings.

Who is Goodbye to the Machine for?

Jay: Yamoto, your grand papa, all dims chilling, hermaphrodites, aliens, and certainly you.

How was the writing process for Goodbye to the Machine different from other albums?

Jay: The bulk of the material was not preexisting this time, it was written in one month deadline.

Louie: I had a challenge with writing the drum parts. I didn’t want to “choose” drum parts. I wanted to play for the songs. They play a great story, you don’t want to overplay and step on everybody else. I’m very happy with the way it came out.

Jay: it was a true collaborative effort, involving the whole Hurt team as writers.

What do you aim to achieve with the release of Goodbye to the Machine?

Jay: GLOBAL DOMINATION!!! A cure for cancer; an immediate boost in sex appeal, mainly in the octogenarian market; and perhaps an album that you will enjoy for the rest of your life.

What are your favorite tracks off Goodbye to the Machine?

Jay: mine is 1331. Good memories.

Louie: Wars, for the driving beat. It’s an epic song with such a great texture. It’s a beautiful song to play

Paul: Got Jealous, That (Such A Thing)

Rick: Role Martyr and That (Such A Thing).

You’ve toured quite a bit as a band. What is your favorite city to play?

Jay: Indianapolis. There are lot of places and a lot of great folks. The reason why I picked indi is because they were the first to really support us.

What are some of your favorite artists?

Louie: bob Dylan, Andreano Chelentano, Johnny Cach, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Edith Piaf, Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers.

Paul: John Lennon, Elvis Costello, David Bowie, Tori Amos.

Jay: a bunch of stuffy old farts that nobody gives a shit about, usually in the classical world, Johnny Cach, and Roy Orbison.

Rick: Nick Cave, Jeff Buckley, Hank senior, U2, Hours, XTC.

When you’re not playing shows or recording new music what are some of your favorite pastimes?

Paul: tattooing

Rick: thinking about playing music, cooking.

Jay: writing music, trying to work out, working on my music, and gourmet cooking.

Louie: painting, breathing, spending time with family and friends, and practicing my drums.

Where will Hurt be five years from now? How will the music have evolved?

Jay: Sadly, this depends on whether or not people buy the record. If we are lucky enough to be one of the bands out there five years from now, we will continue in our purest pursue of surprising the listener with provocative sounds, lyrics and thoughts to the best of our ability, while retaining and include familiarity so that you always feel at home when you listen to one of our albums.
