Yawning Man - Rock Formations

To those in the know, the name Yawning Man carries considerable weight. They’re the godfathers of desert rock; that s t y l e of music that is as much about the mood as it is about the riff. Good desert rock makes you want to lie on your back, stretched out like Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man, and soaking up the sun and the contagious energy the music puts forth. Good desert rock can make you feel high even if you’re not.

And Rock Formations is good desert rock. The ten instrumental tracks on this album do all of what was stated above, and then some. Starting with “Rock Formations” and ending with “Buffalo Chips,” Yawning Man make music that seems so natural, so effortless, that really the only way of describing it is as art. Gary Arce’s guitar weaves throughout the rhythms laid down by bassist Mario Lalli and drummer Alfredo Herandez, and it sounds exactly how you’d want it to sound. Not that it’s expected or clichéd – it just is.

With Rock Formations, Yawning Man have created a thing of beauty. It’s personal music that has a universal feel to it. It’s music to feel good about. Highly recommended.
